CT-DRA Drag Reducing Agent
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
CT DRA 101 is an Ultra-high molecular weight, linear olefin that reduces frictional pressure during fluid flow in a conduit or pipeline. This long chain polymer chemical that when injected into a pipeline (where the fluid is turbulent) can modify the flow regime by reducing the frictional pressure drop along the pipeline length.
BACKGROUND
Approximately 60% of the world's oil production derives from offshore operations, also in very deep waters up to at least 8000 meters. Thus the pipelines for introducing additives to oil well heads and transporting oil to gathering structures are also very long and often flexible.
When a fluid, such as a liquid hydrocarbon, is fed through a conduit, friction resulting from the fluid stream causes a pressure drop increasing with the distance from the point(s) of feeding. Such a friction loss, also called drag, increases the energy and equipment costs required for fluid transportation through the conduit.
APPLICATION
The phenomenon of drag reducing was first observed in 1943. It was found that by adding small amounts of certain synthetic oil soluble polymers to pipeline systems in turbulent flow there was a substantial reduction in fluid flow resistance.
CT-DRA-101, applied in existing systems results in increased production (without mechanical modification), reduction of operating costs such as pumping power, reduction of pipeline pressure while maintaining throughput, and to improve refinery handling.
CHEMISTY OF DRAG REDUCERS
Ultra high molecular weight linear, poly olefin has a complex branched structure with an olefin bond in the alpha position of one of the branches.
ADVANTAGES
The benefits of using a drag reducing agent are the following:
1. Increase in pipeline throughput.
2. Reduction of the waiting time for tanker loading/offloading.
3. Maintaining the throughput during MOL (Main Oil Line) pump maintenance for de-rated lines.
4. Bypassing MOL pump stations.
5. Energy Savings.
KEY FACTORS
Low toxicity.
Hydrolytically stable.
Excellent additive response.
Compatible with mineral oils, esters and alkylated napthalene.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Physical appearance - Clear Liquid
Specific gravity - 0.85 – 1.0
Flash Point (PMCC) - Above 200°F.
RECOMMENDED TREATMENT
CT DRA is usually injected into a pipeline just at the discharge side of the mainline pump. A positive displacement pump capable of surpassing the line pressure is used to inject DRA into the pipeline. Recommended treatment of CT DRA 101 is based on the oil type and field trials.
PACKING AND STORAGE
CT DRA 101 is packaged in 5-gal (18.9-L) cans and 55-gal (208-L) drums. Store in dry, well-‐‑ventilated area. Keep container closed. Keep away from heat, sparks and flames.
